RAID 5 can lose one disk and keep running — but only one. These are the failures that end up on the bench.
RAID 5 covers one dead disk, but rebuilding onto a fresh one thrashes the tired survivors for hours. A second drive giving out part-way through is the classic route from 'degraded' to 'down'.
A failed RAID controller, host adapter or backplane can pull the whole array offline while every disk stays healthy. The layout and parity metadata have to be read back before the volume returns.
When a disk drops and the array limps on degraded, that member goes stale. Forcing it back in later blends old and current data and wrecks the parity across the set.
Unnoticed bad sectors on more than one member leave parity unable to cover every stripe. We image around the weak spots before any rebuild is attempted.
Recreating the set, initialising it, or a hopeful 'repair' from the controller dashboard can overwrite the very metadata that records how your data is laid out.
Capacity expansions and RAID-level migrations that halt half-way leave the array inconsistent and simply unable to mount.
Your original disks are never worked on live. Each member is cloned to a stable image on hardware imagers, and any physically failing disk is repaired in the clean room first. From those images we work out the exact disk order, stripe size, rotation and parity direction, rebuild the array virtually and pull your files off — leaving the originals intact as a fallback.
The reflex after a RAID 5 failure is to drop in a new disk and let the controller rebuild. On an array that has already spent its redundancy, that rebuild leans hardest on the remaining drives at the exact moment they can least cope — and a second failure mid-way turns a routine recovery into a difficult one. If a rebuild has already failed, power the box down and don't run it again.

Please remove the internal hard drive or SSD and send us just the drive — we don't provide an internal drive-removal service. We don't recover storage soldered to a motherboard (e.g. Apple Silicon Macs and some thin laptops) — only drives that can be removed and sent to us.
