// top 10 faults we recover from

The ten ways they fail

Every cctv / dvr job starts by matching the symptoms to the fault — these ten cover almost everything that reaches the bench.

Recorder hard drive failure

Surveillance drives write 24/7 and die young — the footage is carved from whatever the platters still hold.

Footage overwritten

Loop recording ate the date you need; fragments often survive in unallocated space if the unit stops now.

Recordings deleted

Menu deletions remove the index, not necessarily the video — power down immediately.

DVR dead (PSU / board)

The recorder dies, the drive doesn't; footage extracts directly from the disk.

Formatted during a 'repair'

An engineer resets the recorder and the archive goes with it — carving recovers what the format skipped.

Proprietary file-system corruption

Hikvision, Dahua and friends use non-standard formats that break in non-standard ways.

Damaged in a break-in

Smashed or ripped-out recorders — the drive inside usually survives the violence.

Water or fire damage

Flood-site and fire-site recorders are treated and imaged in the lab like any damaged drive.

Footage needed in playable format

Raw streams reassembled by camera and timestamp, exported to standard formats for police or insurers.

Timestamp / index corruption

Recordings exist but the recorder can't find them — the index is rebuilt from the streams themselves.

Recorder formats are the hard part

CCTV recorders — Hikvision, Dahua, Swann, HiLook, Annke and dozens of rebadged systems — write video in proprietary formats onto surveillance hard drives, usually with no standard file system at all. Recovering footage means understanding those raw formats: we carve the video streams directly from the disk, reassemble them by camera channel and timestamp, and export standard playable files with the original timing preserved.

Incident footage and legal work

Where footage is needed for police, court or insurance, continuity matters. We document the handling chain, work only from verified images of the original drive, and can supply footage with integrity hashes. Tell us the incident date and time window up front — it focuses the recovery on the exact recordings you need.

// the equipment we use

A professional lab, not software guesswork

CCTV work is video forensics on top of drive recovery:

Proprietary format carvers

Parsers for Hikvision, Dahua and the rebadged ecosystem — raw surveillance formats turned back into footage.

Stream reassembly software

Frames matched by channel and timestamp, rebuilt into continuous, playable video.

Surveillance-drive imaging

WD Purple and Seagate SkyHawk drives imaged with the standard hardware-imager stack.

Forensic hashing & handling

Verified images, documented chain of custody and integrity hashes where footage is evidence.

Export & conversion suite

Recovered footage delivered in formats that actually play — for you, your insurer or the police.

Hardware write-blockers

Original recorder drives are never written to — everything happens on the image.

Recorders on the bench most weeks

Most 'own-brand' recorders are Hikvision or Dahua underneath — the drive tells us the truth once it's on the bench.

// getting your device to us

Post or courier your device — it's simple

Most customers post or courier their device to us — it arrives next morning, and the free diagnostic starts the day it lands.

Sending a drive from a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac or server? Please remove the internal hard drive or SSD and send us just the drive — we don't provide an internal drive-removal service. If the storage is soldered in (e.g. Apple Silicon), call us first on 0800 689 0668.

  • Wrap the device in bubble wrap or a padded envelope — no need to include cables or power supplies.
  • Print and enclose the booking-in & shipping form (PDF) with your name, phone number and a brief description of what happened.
  • Send by Royal Mail Special Delivery or any tracked courier for full insurance in transit.
  • Prefer to hand it over in person? You can drop it in at reception at the address shown, Mon–Fri 9:00am–5:30pm.

// cctv / dvr recovery questions

Common questions

Sometimes. Overwriting is progressive, and fragments of older recordings often survive in unallocated areas. Recovery depends on how much has been written since — the sooner the recorder is powered off, the better the odds.
Yes, frequently. Deleting from the recorder's menu removes the index, not necessarily the video data. Power the unit down immediately so the space isn't reused, then remove the hard drive from the recorder and send us the drive.
Please send just the hard drive — remove it from the recorder first (it's usually only a few screws), as we don't remove drives from devices. Include the recorder make/model and, if known, the date range you need.
The diagnostic is free and we quote a fixed price once we've assessed the drive — CCTV recovery is priced at £400 + VAT for standard recorder drives, and you pay nothing if the footage can't be recovered.
