A mechanical hard drive stores your data on precision platters read by heads flying nanometres above the surface — when it fails, every extra power-on risks making things worse. WD's colour-coded families — Blue in family desktops, Black in performance builds, Red in NAS bays — share one signature ageing fault: the service area, the drive's private firmware zone, silts up with relocation records until the drive responds to the computer at a crawl or stops responding altogether. That slow state looks terminal but rarely is: the bench talks to the drive in manufacturer service mode, tidies the firmware, and the platters image normally afterwards. Dropped and knocked WDs are a different job — donor head swaps in the clean bench — and both kinds arrive in numbers every month.
Barracudas carry a well-known set of firmware traps — drives that hang at 'busy', declare zero capacity or vanish from the BIOS while the mechanics remain in perfect health — and those states are unpicked through the drive's diagnostic port with the casing never opened. A Barracuda that starts clicking after a knock or a fall is the other Seagate classic: failed heads, which means matched donor parts in the clean bench before imaging begins. Between firmware states and head damage, Seagate is the badge that crosses this bench more than any other.
Deskstar and Travelstar drives passed from IBM to Hitachi in 2003 and later became WD's HGST line, and all three badge eras still arrive weekly out of desktops and laptops built across two decades. Their signature failure is a tiring head stack — reads slow down, one platter surface starts erroring ahead of the rest, and eventually the drive ticks instead of mounting. Recovery runs surface by surface: the healthy heads secure their platters first, then a matched donor stack from the library goes in to read whatever the weak head left behind.
Before Hitachi took the line over, Deskstar and Travelstar were IBM drives, and IDE-era examples still emerge from retired towers and loft-stored laptops around Sheffield, with the last surviving copy of old accounts and photo archives aboard. Long dormancy brings its own failure modes — seized bearings, sticky spindle lubricant and heads stuck fast to the platters — so these drives visit the clean bench before power ever touches them. The legacy shelf keeps PATA adapters and period donor parts, which means an IBM badge is never by itself a reason to write the data off.
