External Hard Drive Recovery Sheffield

The drive that held the backup is often the drive that fails. Dropped off the desk, knocked mid-transfer or simply not showing up any more — we recover external and portable USB drives from every maker, every week.

Free diagnostic on every external drive job. Fixed quote before any work — and no fix, no fee.

// top 10 faults we recover from

The ten ways they fail

Every external drive job starts by matching the symptoms to the fault — these ten cover almost everything that reaches the bench.

Dropped — now clicking

The classic external-drive death: heads fail on impact and every retry risks the platters.

Light on, nothing appears

USB bridge, electronics or firmware failure — the drive lives but can't speak.

'You need to format the disk'

File-system corruption from yanked cables and interrupted writes; the files sit beneath the error.

Beeping when plugged in

Stiction or a seized motor — the drive is trying and failing to spin. Stop powering it.

Not detected on any computer

Dead electronics or bridge; imaging happens through or around the original board.

Hardware-encrypted board failure (WD)

My Passport and Elements encrypt invisibly — a failed board doesn't lose the data, but DIY enclosure swaps hit gibberish.

Desktop external PSU failure

My Book-style drives die with their power bricks — often the cheapest fault, sometimes the messiest.

Slow transfers, hanging folders

Bad sectors spreading across the platters; hardware imagers read around them before it's too late.

Accidental format or deletion

Usually fully recoverable if the drive stops being used at once.

Water, fire or crush damage

Platters survive more than people expect — treated, transplanted and imaged in the clean bench.

Portable drives fail hard — and often

External drives live rough lives: carried in bags, knocked off desks, unplugged mid-write. A drop while spinning is the classic failure — heads touch platters and the drive starts clicking. We recover WD My Passport and Elements, Seagate Expansion and Backup Plus, LaCie, Buffalo, Toshiba Canvio and every other brand, including models with encrypted or USB-soldered boards that can't just be swapped into another enclosure.

A note on WD and Seagate encryption

Many modern portable drives encrypt data invisibly at the hardware level — the USB bridge board is part of the lock. Pulling the disk out and plugging it in via SATA shows gibberish, which panics a lot of DIY attempters. It's normal, and it's routine for us: we recover through or around the original bridge so files come back exactly as they were.

// the equipment we use

A professional lab, not software guesswork

Externals are hard drives wearing a jacket — so the full drive bench applies, plus bridge-specific kit:

PC-3000 UDMA / Portable

The industry-standard firmware bench — talks to drives in manufacturer service mode to repair translators, remap defects and unlock service areas.

DeepSpar & Atola hardware imagers

Sector-by-sector imaging of unstable drives with per-head control, current monitoring and automatic retry strategies no software imager can match.

Laminar-flow clean bench

Filtered Class-100 airflow for open-drive work — head swaps and platter handling happen here, never on an open desk.

Head-replacement & platter tools

Precision combs and lifters for exchanging head stacks and migrating platter packs into donor chassis without contact damage.

Donor drive library

Thousands of matched donor drives indexed by model, firmware family and site code — the right head stack or PCB is usually already on the shelf.

USB-bridge & encryption handling

Original-bridge imaging and decryption for WD's hardware-encrypted portables and other SED enclosures.

Donor enclosure & bridge stock

Failed interface boards are matched from stock so encrypted drives keep their key chain intact.

// getting your device to us

Post or courier your device — it's simple

Most customers post or courier their device to us — it arrives next morning, and the free diagnostic starts the day it lands.

Sending a drive from a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac or server? Please remove the internal hard drive or SSD and send us just the drive — we don't provide an internal drive-removal service. If the storage is soldered in (e.g. Apple Silicon), call us first on 0800 689 0668.

  • Wrap the device in bubble wrap or a padded envelope — no need to include cables or power supplies.
  • Print and enclose the booking-in & shipping form (PDF) with your name, phone number and a brief description of what happened.
  • Send by Royal Mail Special Delivery or any tracked courier for full insurance in transit.
  • Prefer to hand it over in person? You can drop it in at reception at the address shown, Mon–Fri 9:00am–5:30pm.

// external drive recovery questions

Common questions

Unplug it and don't try it again — clicking after a drop means head damage, and every retry risks platter scoring. It needs donor heads fitted in a clean environment, which is exactly what our lab does.
Could be the USB bridge, the drive's electronics, or a mechanical fault. All three are recoverable; the free diagnostic will pinpoint which one you have and what the fixed price is.
Yes — they're the two most common drives through our lab, including their hardware-encrypted models. We work with the original bridge board where needed so encryption isn't a dead end.
Bubble-wrap the drive (no cables needed), box it, and post or courier it tracked to our Leeds receiving lab. It's typically with us next morning and the diagnostic starts the day it arrives.
