Many modern portable drives encrypt data invisibly at the hardware level — the USB bridge board is part of the lock. Pulling the disk out and plugging it in via SATA shows gibberish, which panics a lot of DIY attempters. LaCie built its name on drives that travel — Rugged portables riding in camera bags, d2 desktops under edit suites, the polished Porsche Design range on studio shelves — and travel is exactly what kills them: a bag put down hard while the platters are still spinning costs a Rugged its heads, while d2 and Porsche Design units more often lose their USB-C or Thunderbolt bridge electronics than the disk behind them. Since the brand folded into Seagate there is no meaningful vendor repair route left, so a dead LaCie either reaches a lab or stays dead. We see them every week from photographers and video editors across South Yorkshire: the enclosure comes apart, the bare drive is imaged — donor heads fitted first if the drop demands it — and the projects come back off the image.
A My Passport or Elements is not a bare drive in a box — WD solders the USB socket straight onto the drive's own controller board and routes your data through hardware encryption on that same board, so when the electronics fail the files stay locked behind them and moving the disk into a spare caddy shows only unreadable noise. We keep matched donor boards in stock and carry the original encryption chain across intact, which is what turns an 'undetected' Passport back into readable folders. The mains-powered My Book desktops add failure points of their own — dead power bricks and burnt bridge boards — usually with a perfectly healthy drive sitting silent inside.
Buffalo's MiniStation portables arrive with the usual 2.5-inch injuries — drops, bent USB connectors and slowly spreading bad sectors — while the mains-powered DriveStation desktops tend to outlive their own PSUs and interface boards. Some MiniStation models add hardware encryption, which we work through with your password so the files come back readable rather than scrambled. Whatever the model, the shell is opened, the bare drive is imaged sector by sector, and from there it is a standard drive recovery.

We don't recover storage soldered to a motherboard (e.g. Apple Silicon Macs and some thin laptops) — only drives that can be removed and sent to us.
