// top 10 faults we recover from

The ten ways they fail

Every desktop computer job starts by matching the symptoms to the fault — these ten cover almost everything that reaches the bench.

Windows won't load

Failing drive or corrupted system files — the documents come off the drive regardless.

Drive clicking or grinding

Mechanical failure in progress; power down and stop rebooting it.

Dead after a power surge

Storms and cheap PSUs kill drive electronics; PCB repair and ROM transfer bring the data back.

'Disk boot failure' / drive missing

The drive has dropped off the bus — electronics, firmware or connection failure.

Accidental format or Windows reinstall

The old files usually survive underneath; the sooner the machine stops being used, the more comes back.

Deleted files

Recycle-bin emptied or Shift-Delete — recoverable until overwritten.

Failing drive, endless hangs

Bad sectors stall the whole machine; imaging hardware reads around the damage.

Malware / ransomware

Infected desktops recover via imaging and clean extraction — see our ransomware guide.

Two-drive / motherboard RAID problems

Striped pairs double the failure surface; both drives image before any reassembly.

Legacy PC data retrieval

IDE and SCSI drives from retired machines — the adapters are already on the shelf.

Towers, workstations and all-in-ones

A desktop makes access easy — the drive slides out and the recovery follows the same path as any hard drive or SSD job. All-in-ones (like touchscreen family PCs) are more like laptops and can be sent whole. For workstations running two drives or motherboard RAID, tell us the setup when you get in touch so the drives are imaged and reassembled in the right order.

Reinstalled Windows over your files?

A surprisingly common one: a shop or a well-meaning relative reinstalls Windows to fix a problem, and the documents folder goes with it. The old files are often still on the disk underneath the new installation — the sooner the machine stops being used, the more we can carve back out.

// the equipment we use

A professional lab, not software guesswork

Desktop jobs get the full hard drive and SSD stack, plus the legacy shelf:

PC-3000 UDMA / SSD benches

Firmware-level access for the drive inside, whatever its age or interface.

DeepSpar & Atola hardware imagers

Unstable desktop drives image sector by sector with hardware-level retry control.

Laminar-flow clean bench + donor library

Clicking desktop drives get head swaps from matched donors under filtered air.

Legacy interface adapters

IDE/PATA, SCSI and early SATA — twenty years of retired family PCs remain readable.

Sector-by-sector imaging

The drive you send is imaged in full on hardware imagers first, so recovery always runs on a copy and your original is never stressed.

Hardware write-blockers

Originals are imaged read-only before analysis, every time.

Desktops on the bench most weeks

Office fleets, gaming rigs and the family tower that's quietly held everything since 2011 — plus the all-in-ones that hide a laptop's insides behind a desktop's screen.

// before you post it

Sending it in — remove the drive if you can

Slide the drive out and send just the drive — it's typically two screws and a SATA and power cable inside the tower. We don't provide a drive-removal service, so the tower needs opening at your end; it keeps your postage cheap and your PC at home too.

// getting your device to us

Post or courier your device — it's simple

Most customers post or courier their device to us — it arrives next morning, and the free diagnostic starts the day it lands.

Sending a drive from a computer, laptop, MacBook, iMac or server? Please remove the internal hard drive or SSD and send us just the drive — we don't provide an internal drive-removal service. If the storage is soldered in (e.g. Apple Silicon), call us first on 0800 689 0668.

  • Wrap the device in bubble wrap or a padded envelope — no need to include cables or power supplies.
  • Print and enclose the booking-in & shipping form (PDF) with your name, phone number and a brief description of what happened.
  • Send by Royal Mail Special Delivery or any tracked courier for full insurance in transit.
  • Prefer to hand it over in person? You can drop it in at reception at the address shown, Mon–Fri 9:00am–5:30pm.

Common questions

Just the drive, please. Remove it from the tower and send that on its own — it's usually two screws and a SATA/power cable. We don't provide a drive-removal service, so the tower needs opening at your end first; it keeps your postage cheap and your PC at home too.
Often, yes. A reinstall overwrites some of the disk but rarely all of it. Stop using the PC immediately and send the drive in — we'll recover everything the reinstall didn't touch.
Yes. Surges usually kill the drive's electronics rather than the platters. We repair or transplant the PCB, adapt its firmware, and image the drive as normal.
Yes — including RAID workstations, small business servers and NAS units. See our RAID recovery page, or call and describe the setup; we'll tell you the safest way to get it to the lab.
