Twelve Gigabytes of Nonsense From Free Software

After accidentally formatting his 500GB external, a South Yorkshire customer set about rescuing it himself. "I have tried many software's to recover my Pictures, Music and Videos", he explains, only to end up "only able to recover 12GB of data that cant even be seen, just information in writing" — from a drive that "had around 470GB of data". His question could not be plainer: can all of it come back? Twelve gigabytes of unreadable fragments from consumer tools is not proof the data is gone — it is proof those free tools hit their ceiling, and possibly a sign that the attempts themselves have begun to cause harm.

The poor result points at the tools, not the drive. Free recovery utilities are shallow by design — they carve for common file signatures and give up on anything fragmented or complex. Recovering 12GB of unusable fragments from a 470GB drive is a classic under-powered-tool outcome: the data is very likely still there in bulk, and the software simply could not assemble it into whole, openable files.

"Can't even be seen, just information in writing" describes a specific, fixable failure. That sounds like files carved without their structure — raw data with no valid header or index, so nothing will open them. Proper recovery rebuilds the filesystem's own records to restore files intact with their names and organisation, rather than dumping headerless fragments a person then cannot use. The difference is method, not luck.

The real risk in what he did is the writing, and it must be said plainly. Some consumer tools install onto, or write working data to, the very drive being recovered — and every such write lands on the free space where the formatted files still live, potentially destroying them. Repeated attempts multiply that danger. This is precisely why the first professional step is imaging the drive and never touching the original again: to freeze whatever survives before anything else is risked.

Recovering "all of it" depends on two things, stated honestly. First, the format type — a quick format leaves the data area intact and recovery prospects high; a full format that overwrote the surface is far more limited. Second, how much those DIY tools wrote back to the drive. Both are read from the image at assessment, and the realistic ceiling is set by evidence, not by hope — a nearly-full drive formatted quickly and not overwritten can recover very substantially, but a promise of "everything" before assessment would be dishonest.

His media types are favourable, which helps the outlook. Photographs, music and video all carry strong, recognisable signatures that carve well, and deep signature analysis on a full write-blocked image reaches far more than a free tool's quick scan. Where the filesystem structures also survive, those files come back organised rather than as an unnavigable heap.

The honest deliverable separates the good from the damaged. Rather than a vague count, the result is a validated listing — files that open correctly distinguished from those the format or prior attempts corrupted — so he sees exactly what was recovered and in what condition, before anything is paid.
