Twenty-Five Hundred Files and a Fair Question About the Fee

This enquiry, which reached our South Yorkshire lab, gets straight to business. The need is to "recover important Church documents from a corrupted USB stick""about 2500 files total", a few gigabytes of documents, spreadsheets and images on a 32GB stick — followed by the question most people are too polite to raise: "how much of the fee is to be paid if you only recover a few documents / files". There is no rush, either; they are "happy to wait the 2-3 days". A question like that deserves a structural answer rather than a soothing one: the fee is quoted against a verified listing of what can be recovered, seen before a penny changes hands.

"Corrupted" on a stick that still appears is usually an index problem, not a data problem. A filesystem is a thin layer of bookkeeping over a large area of content. When an unclean removal or a failing write damages the bookkeeping, the host reports corruption and refuses entry — while the 2,500 files sit substantially untouched behind the broken directory. The prognosis for a case presented like this one is genuinely good.

Low occupancy quietly improves the odds further. A couple of gigabytes on a 32GB stick means the data occupies a small, likely contiguous region written early in the stick's life — less fragmentation, less overlap with any damaged area, and cleaner results from both structural repair and signature carving.

Modern document and spreadsheet formats carry strong internal signatures and their own integrity checks, so a carved copy either opens correctly or announces its damage honestly.
