A small external drive sits at the centre of this one. Her laptop "lost power at the start of opening files", and ever since Windows has offered its least helpful sentence — "parameter is incorrect" — so that she "can't open drive to access files": photographs, documents and videos. Reassuringly, the hardware itself still responds: "Hard drive recognised by laptop, but unable to open". Recognised but unopenable after a power cut is filesystem damage in one of its most recoverable forms: the interruption corrupted the structures that describe the volume, not the regions holding her files.

"The parameter is incorrect" is Windows failing to parse the volume's paperwork. The drive answered, identified itself, and offered its contents — and the operating system found the descriptive structures at the front of the volume inconsistent, so it refused the whole thing. The error describes broken bookkeeping, not broken storage.
The timing explains the damage precisely. Filesystems update their records as they are used, and mounting a drive to open files is exactly such a moment. Power failing mid-update leaves a record half-written — internally contradictory in the way that produces this exact error. The files being opened, and everything else aboard, were bystanders to an interrupted administrative write.
Filesystems anticipate this, which is why the prognosis is good. Critical structures carry backup copies elsewhere on the volume — a spare boot sector, mirrored allocation records, redundant table entries. An interruption rarely destroys an original and its distant twin together, so reconstruction is usually a matter of finding the intact copy and reading the volume through it. Names, folders and dates typically survive along with the files.
The dangerous move from here is the helpful one. Windows will offer to scan and fix; repair utilities will offer the same. Automated repair writes its conclusions onto the patient — and a wrong conclusion, applied to the only copy of the structures, converts a tidy reconstruction into an archaeology job. Nothing that writes to this drive should touch it again; every operation belongs on a write-blocked image.
Her restraint has already banked the good outcome. No fixers run, no format accepted, no experiments — the volume is exactly as the power cut left it, which is the best state a case like this can arrive in.
The honest caveat is small and specific. Whatever files were mid-transaction at the instant of failure may come back incomplete — a document truncated, one video with a flaw. That set is naturally tiny compared to a volume of settled data, and it is reported by name from the reconstruction rather than left for her to find.
