Slower for Months, Then "Please Insert a Disk"

A year of photographs and files sits on her 16GB stick, which "got progressively slower over the last few months". Today it managed a brief spell of working "before self-ejecting" and then declaring "Please insert a disk into Removable Disk (D:)". She held off for good reason: "I was reluctant to attempt to do anything, such as formatting the drive myself". The gradual slowdown and that final message are one story told twice — flash memory decaying behind a controller that resisted, lost, and now stands as the working half of the device.

The decode

A stick that slows over months is reporting its own decline. Flash cells wear as they age, and worn cells read back with errors the controller must correct. Early on that correction is invisible; later it takes retries, and retries are what slowness is. The performance she noticed was the error rate climbing towards the edge of what the controller could hide.

"Please insert a disk" is a precise message, and it is better news than silence. The drive letter exists, which means the controller woke, spoke USB, and identified itself. What it could not do was mount the memory behind it — either the flash now returns more errors than correction can bridge, or the controller's private map of where everything lives has itself become unreadable. Both are the natural end of the wear she watched happen.

Declining to format was the decision that preserved everything. A format at this stage would command the failing controller to write fresh structures onto degraded memory — destructive at both ends of the operation, and the single most common way this recoverable situation is made unrecoverable at home.

The self-eject mid-transfer draws one boundary worth knowing. Files that finished copying before the eject are safe where they landed; anything mid-flight will be incomplete at the destination. The stick itself remains the master copy of the year, which is why it is now the patient.

Two laboratory routes cover this failure, in order of preference. Where the controller still part-responds, it is addressed in technological mode and made to read the memory out under laboratory control, retries managed externally. Where it has given up entirely, the memory chip leaves the board and is read raw — after which its contents must be reassembled, because a controller's private format is scrambled, interleaved and error-coded rather than stored as files.

The honest boundary is the memory itself. Wear-degraded cells sometimes carry regions no amount of correction returns cleanly. The realistic outcome for a stick like this is the substantial majority of the files with a small damaged remainder — quantified after the read, never promised before it.
