A 24TB My Book has gone dark on him — "It will not power up upon being plugged in" — and he "cannot get my computer to recognise the drive at all". It carries "probably 15ish TB of data", all of it video, and although the drive is still under warranty he has already seen the trap: "WD dont offer any form of data recovery, only a replacement drive". That trap is the entire case: a warranty exchange hands back the drive with the data still locked inside, so recovery must come first — and a desktop external that is stone dead often hides the most fixable fault on the bench.

Completely dead is the most hopeful presentation a desktop external offers. Drives rarely die silently; they click, whir, or appear and vanish. Total lifelessness on an externally powered unit points overwhelmingly at the power path — and the commonest culprit of all is the mains adapter, a component that contains none of the data and costs the least in the case.
The order of investigation is a ladder of decreasing luck. Adapter first, tested under load rather than trusted for showing a light. Then the enclosure's bridge board, whose small power stage fails far more often than the drive it feeds. Only when clean power at the drive connector still produces silence does this become a drive-level case at all — and most units in this state never get that far down the ladder.
The bridge in a My Book is not an innocent adapter board. These enclosures encrypt on the bridge in hardware as standard, password or no password. The drive inside carries ciphertext, which means the bridge — or its encryption role — must survive the recovery. A well-meaning transplant into a generic caddy produces a healthy-looking drive full of noise, so the original board stays in the case and in the plan whatever else is replaced.
The warranty is real value and the sequence protects it. Exchanging now hands fifteen terabytes to a returns process; the replacement arrives empty and the original is gone. Recovery leaves warranty entitlement intact — the fault is genuine and none of the diagnostic work changes that — so the honest order costs nothing except patience: image the data out, verify it, then send the empty patient back for its free replacement.
Fifteen terabytes shapes logistics, not difficulty. Video at this volume is a long imaging run and a large destination requirement rather than a technical obstacle.
