Sixteen Days Is Not an Estimate, It Is a Diagnosis

This portable drive has already failed, yet Windows still lists it as a "Seagate BUP Slim SCSI Disk Device", and the manufacturer's own recovery software is willing to attempt it — with one catch: "the time stated is 16 days". Waiting on the platters is a whole creative world — "I run a DND campaign so I'm gathering assets" — together with documents and "Many large GIMP image files". A sixteen-day countdown is not slow software; it is software inching across a drive that fails on nearly every read, and allowing that scan to proceed means sixteen more days of wear on a mechanism already losing.

The decode

First, the name that misleads: there is no exotic hardware here. "SCSI Disk Device" is simply the label Windows hangs on external drives attached through its modern USB storage driver, and "BUP" is Backup Plus. The string that reads like a museum interface describes an ordinary current portable — the mystery in the device name is not part of the fault.

Sixteen days is arithmetic confessing a failure. A healthy portable reads its entire surface in hours. Software estimates by measuring achieved speed, so a sixteen-day projection means throughput has collapsed a hundredfold or worse — each sector taking retry after retry before yielding or being given up. The estimate is the most precise diagnostic she has been handed: this drive fails on nearly every read it attempts.

Software retries are the most expensive way to fail. A consumer tool asks politely through the operating system, which retries generously, which keeps a struggling head grinding over damaged surface for every difficult sector — the exact regime that turns a degrading drive into a dead one somewhere around day three of sixteen. The scan was survivable to start; it is not survivable to finish.

Hardware imaging inverts the economics of every read. An imager with firmware-level control caps retries at one or two attempts, skips what resists, maps what each head can still do, and returns to the difficult regions last — spending the drive's remaining life on the easy majority first. The same surface that projects sixteen days of grinding yields most of its contents in a controlled pass measured in hours, with the hard residue attempted only once the bulk is safe.

Her data profile favours that strategy strongly. Campaign assets, documents and image sources are many discrete files spread across the volume. A bulk-first image typically lands the overwhelming majority intact, with damage concentrated in whichever files sat on the worst regions — an outcome reported honestly, file by file, from the completed image.

Stopping the scan was the recovery's first success. The instinct to ask for advice at day zero rather than day sixteen is the reason this case file reads as routine rather than as a post-mortem.

Note what the estimate told you and hand the drive over for retry-limited hardware imaging while the easy majority of the surface is still easy.
