A WD external arrived with a telling trio of symptoms: it is "no longer discoverable", makes "all sorts of chirping noises", and — the detail that counts — "responds to the cable being moved/wiggled". Every port and cable has been tried, and the owner is refreshingly candid on two points: "I did have a look inside to see if the head was jammed onto the disk but it was parked", and "this was my sole back up drive", prepared "in anticipation of a disk clean of my Mac". When behaviour shifts as the cable moves, the fault is sitting in the connection path — though the honest other half is that opening the lid changed the terms of the job.

Position-sensitive faults live in metal, not on platters. Data on a disk does not care how the cable lies. A drive that flickers to life when the lead is flexed has a fractured conductor somewhere between plug and board — classically the solder fillets where a small USB socket is anchored to the bridge PCB, which take the whole mechanical load of every insertion.
The chirping fits the same picture. A drive receiving interrupted power spins up, browns out, retries — and each aborted attempt produces short mechanical chirps. That sound pattern under unstable power is very different from the rhythmic clicking of a failed head, which is one reason the diagnosis leans away from the mechanism.
The wiggle that proves the fault is also the thing to stop doing. Every flex-and-retry cycle is another brownout mid-spin-up. The drive has told you where the problem is; further demonstrations only add power-cycle stress to a mechanism you need healthy.
Opening the lid was understandable and still has to be priced in. His observation was useful — parked heads rule out one bad scenario — but a hard drive's internals are engineered for filtered air, and a domestic opening admits particles the head flying height cannot tolerate. It does not doom the recovery; it does mean the drive gets a clean-air inspection before it spins under our power, and it is the reason the never-open rule exists for drives even when curiosity is reasonable.
On WD portables, the bridge board is not a generic part. Many encrypt on the USB bridge in hardware even when no password was ever set. Repair therefore means fixing this board or carrying its encryption role forward — a straight swap to a lookalike returns cleanly enumerating ciphertext. This is board-level rework with the original components preserved, not parts substitution.
The migration detail is the lesson half of this file. A single drive holding the only copy, loaded specifically so the source could be wiped, is a backup with no redundancy at its moment of maximum importance. The rule that survives this story: nothing gets wiped until the copy has been read back somewhere else.

Don't open the casing: even a careful look exposes a mechanism built for filtered air, and on WD portables don't let anyone "just swap the USB board", because the original bridge often performs hardware encryption and a substitute board returns unreadable data. And before any planned wipe of a source machine, read your backup back from a second location first.
