Since around 2010 a single 2GB card has stayed in one camera, holding perhaps a thousand pictures, and only yesterday "it was completely fine". Then came a new card reader, a phone, and the shock — "The pictures have completely disappeared". Back in the camera it is "also saying no pictures", while a laptop reports "1.83 GB is free of 1.83 GB". That final figure is the diagnosis: the card is answering truthfully about its size and falsely about its contents, which is the signature of a lost filing system — not lost photographs.

Free space equal to total space is the tell. A failing card struggles to report anything; this one reports its exact geometry and an immaculate zero. The controller and memory are answering. What has gone is the small region that says where the pictures live — the index, not the library.
The overnight timing points at the newest participant. The card was fine in the camera, then met a phone through a new reader, and was empty everywhere afterwards. Phones prompt to format cards they cannot immediately parse, and a single acknowledged tap — easy to make on an unfamiliar dialog — performs a quick initialisation. The alternative on a card this age is corruption of the allocation tables. Both produce exactly this presentation, and the bench treatment is the same.
A quick format erases almost nothing. It writes fresh, empty filing structures at the front of the card and leaves the photograph data behind them untouched. On a 2GB FAT16 card that filing region is tiny — which is why the recovery outlook for the pictures themselves is strong.
What decides completeness is what has been written since. Every new photograph or file saved to a blank-looking card lands on top of the old data. Here, nothing has been written — the card was investigated, not reused — and that restraint is the single biggest factor in the result.
Names and folders may not survive even when every image does. Carving reads the data area for the photographs' own signatures, independent of the lost index. Cameras name files generically anyway, so the practical loss is folder dates rather than anything meaningful; the images carry their own internal timestamps.
Fifteen years of service argues for retirement after recovery. The card has done nothing wrong here, but consumer flash from 2010 owes nobody anything further. Recover, verify, and let it stop while it is ahead.

"Full capacity free" on a card you know was full is a filesystem statement, not the truth about the data area. Note which device touched it last, because an unfamiliar phone or reader prompting to fix or format a card is the classic route to exactly this. Recovery prospects are decided by what gets written next, so the winning move is writing nothing.
