Three Losses, One Order of Work

Three separate disasters reached us in a single South Yorkshire enquiry: a WD My Cloud whose "front light turns from orange to red" as the drive strains to read, "sometimes clicking, or stopping", and unreachable across the network. Next, a failed phone transfer after which the handset "underwent factory reset", leaving "No trace of data on Dell laptop or SSD" where it was meant to land; and, almost as an afterthought, "Samsung laptop water damaged". Three faults need a triage order, and one of them needs the honest sentence nobody sells: a factory-reset modern phone is not a recovery job at any price.

The decode

Triage runs on clocks, not on which loss hurts most. The wet laptop corrodes a little more every hour and must never be powered again until cleaned — that is the most urgent instruction even if it is the least valuable device. The clicking NAS drive degrades only when running, so it waits safely unpowered. The reset phone has no clock at all, for the bleakest reason.

The My Cloud's lights describe a drive problem wearing a network costume. Orange-to-red with clicking is the enclosure reporting that its single internal drive fails its checks — dashboards and ethernet are irrelevant to a mechanism that cannot read. The drive comes out, joins native SATA, and becomes an ordinary degraded-drive imaging job with one twist: the volume inside is a Linux filesystem no Windows machine mounts, so extraction happens from the image with the right tools, not by plugging the bare drive into a PC.

The phone deserves the truth, stated once and plainly. Modern Android encrypts storage per-file with keys held in hardware; a factory reset destroys those keys, and destroying the keys is the erasure — the chips still hold data that nothing in existence can decrypt. No laboratory recovers it, and a service that promises to is describing a product that cannot exist. The honest money goes elsewhere.

Elsewhere means the transfer's footprints. The dock-and-desktop copy that failed may still have written partial file sets, caches or staging folders before it died — on the portable SSD, on the Dell. "No trace" to a browsing eye is not the same as none to a signature sweep under a write-blocker. Whatever the transfer managed to move before failing is the entire recoverable universe for that phone, so those two targets get searched properly.

The wet laptop is the cheapest save in the whole enquiry. Liquid kills electronics slowly through corrosion and suddenly through powered shorts. Kept off, cleaned, and inspected under magnification, most water-damaged laptops surrender their drives intact even when the machine itself never runs again.

Presenting all three together was the right instinct. Sequenced as one case — stabilise the wet machine, image the NAS drive, sweep the transfer targets, and close the phone question honestly — the enquiry gets maximum recovery and zero money spent on the impossible.

The laptop was opened first, board cleaned with isopropyl and ultrasonic treatment and inspected under stereo microscope, its drive removed for write-blocked imaging. The My Cloud was shelled, its drive imaged on DeepSpar Disk Imager with head-mapping and PC-3000 UDMA behind the unstable heads, and the ext4 volume mounted read-only from the image in UFS Explorer for extraction. The portable SSD and the Dell were swept under a hardware write-blocker for partial transfer sets, and the findings for the reset handset were reported as what they are.

Wet machine stabilised and its drive secured, the NAS volume recovered from a head-mapped image, transfer targets swept for partials, and the phone answered honestly. Several failures landing at once

Power nothing wet, ever again, until it has been cleaned and inspected — corrosion is the clock that never pauses. Leave a clicking drive off; it only worsens while running. And if a modern phone has been factory reset, treat offers to recover it directly with deep suspicion — the reset destroys encryption keys, which is precisely the erasure. Put that effort into wherever the data was being copied to instead; partial transfers leave real footprints.
