Its owner leaves no doubt about his priority — "I very much need the data that is on the SSD" — and asks "how quickly could you assess the chances of recovery". That write-off is an economic judgement on the machine, not a technical one on the drive — and on this particular model, the SSD was designed to lift out in seconds.

Beyond economical repair means the repair costs more than the machine is worth. It is an accounting judgement about mainboards, keyboards and gaskets. Nobody performing that assessment has evaluated your data, and the verdict carries no information about whether the SSD inside is healthy, damp, or dead.
This model makes the right first move easy. The FZ-55 keeps its drive in a quick-release pack behind a latched door — a serviceability decision that now works in his favour. The drive comes out without opening the chassis, and from that moment the write-off machine is irrelevant to the recovery.
A week of sitting wet is the real clock. Liquid damage is progressive: residues conduct and corrode continuously, and corrosion does not pause while a unit travels through an assessment process. The urgency he feels is technically correct, just aimed at the wrong risk — the danger is not delay in recovery, it is any further powered minute before inspection.
The drive must not be powered until it has been examined. If liquid reached the drive pack, applying power through a wet or corroded connector is how a survivable situation becomes a board-level one. Inspection under magnification, cleaning where residue is found, and only then a controlled first power-up under a write-blocker.
Two outcomes cover almost every case like this. Most often the sealed pack protected the drive and it images cleanly on the first controlled attempt — a same-day job once cleared. Where liquid did reach the board, cleaning and component-level work on the drive PCB usually restores enumeration. The honest residual case is a controller destroyed by conduction damage, and that is established by inspection, not assumed from the state of the laptop.
One question to settle early: encryption. A business-class machine may be running BitLocker. That is no obstacle when the owner holds the key or the account that escrowed it — but it is far easier to confirm before imaging than to discover after, so it is asked at intake.

Get the unit or the drive to a laboratory quickly, mention any encryption you use, and bring or send a destination drive for the recovered data.
